Digital security experts are already discussing how to secure your network with the new, open-source OpenStack, but the security industry has yet to catch up.
To get started, here are the five most important steps to take to protect your network from cyberattacks.1.
Get a network topology template for your networkThe easiest way to protect yourself is to get a network template that’s ready for the OpenStack community to use.
It’s a simple tool that will let you specify what kind of network topography your network will have and how to apply it.2.
Deploy a firewall and security appOn a typical home network, you can configure a firewall that allows all connections to the network, including incoming and outgoing connections.
But a home network with a high traffic density or a high number of devices could have a different type of firewall.
An app called OpenFirewall will allow you to deploy and configure firewall apps, such as NetFlow, to let your home network automatically protect itself.
OpenStack also has a suite of apps for deploying firewall and application software, so you don’t have to do it yourself.

Run an OpenStack app and configure the network to meet your requirementsIf you’re going to deploy a firewall, there are a couple of things to consider: First, the firewall should be running a firewall software that’s approved by the Openstack community, so there’s no need to manually download and install additional software.
Also, if your firewall software isn’t approved, it can’t be used.5.
Get an OpenVPN firewall app and set it up on your home router.1The firewall can’t detect or track you if you’re not connected to the internet2Your firewall software won’t protect your home computer or network3The OpenVPN application on your smartphone or tablet can connect to a network that’s configured for OpenStack4You can install a VPN app on the device, or you can connect directly to a public network that has an OpenSource software license, and the app will automatically set up a tunnel between your computer and the public network.
OpenVPN can also be installed on a Mac or PC, or by simply downloading a free app.5You can connect your home machine to a private network and configure it to protect itself with OpenStack6.
Deploy OpenStack and use it for your businessIf you plan on using OpenStack to manage your network, there’s a lot more you can do to protect it.
First, install OpenStack.
You’ll be able to use it to monitor network activity, troubleshoot issues, and manage your firewall, applications, and other network infrastructure.
Next, set up an Openstack account.
This will give you access to the OpenVPN app and the VPN servers you’ll use to connect to the VPN server(s) you’ll deploy to.
If you have multiple OpenStack instances, they’ll automatically sync across all of them.
Finally, configure OpenStack so that it automatically connects to any VPN servers in your network and routes traffic through them.
Once your network is configured, you’ll have a firewall in place to protect the network from attacks.
You also have the option to create a virtual private network (VPN) for use by you and your team, and you can add a firewall to a firewall server to prevent other users from accessing the network.7.
Install the OpenCloud Firewall app and run it on your serverThis is the simplest way to secure the network with OpenCloud, and it’s not as complex as installing additional firewall software.
OpenCloud is an open source firewall software for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
You need to have an OpenCloud account to install it, and then you need to enable it with an OpenShift account.
OpenShift is an online platform for deploying applications, including firewall and VPN software, on top of your OpenStack deployment.8.
Install an OpenPort Forwarder on your firewall or routerOpenPort Forwarding is a technology that allows network traffic to be forwarded to your VPN server from a local IP address to a remote IP address.
You set the port forwarding option on your OpenVPN configuration file to allow traffic to reach the VPN.
OpenPort forwarding allows VPN traffic to flow from your router to your server, so that traffic from outside of your network can reach your server.9.
Install OpenStack firewall and network software on your phone or tabletYou can use the OpenVpn app to run OpenStack on your Android device or iPhone.
OpenVpp can connect you to an OpenVlan server and a VPN server, and your phone can connect with a VPN to your phone.
